About our Department
Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science is a leading educator of professionals in the fields of pharmacy, health care and science in Taiwan. As the revolution and demanded of society, this department was established in 1976 and named Department of applied chemistry. Educational goals were aimed to train students in field of fabricate and analyze chemicals. As medicine and related industry developed so fast, this department was changed name to Department of medicinal chemistry to enhance students’ ability. Nowadays, people pay more attention to health care, safety of food, drug, cosmetics, and related packing materials recently. We turn educational goals to the cultivation of high-technology technical personnel. Name of department is changed to the Department of food & drug Industry and Inspective Technology. Bearing in mind the school’s developmental motto of “Health, Care, Excellence, Sophistication,” hence, knowledge of chemistry is built as a basis professional knowledge to educate students and lead them toward application of medicine and pharmaceuticals in society. At present, this programs annually recruit one class of four-year bachelor’s program and one of five year associate's bachelor’s program.

The goal of technology education is to provide latest development in industries and to train abilities of students to contribute to the community. Essential subjects on inspective technology of food and drug and related industries marketing as supplementary skills are provided in course of education.
Major educational goal of the department is discriminated to four objectives and described as following:
Objective 1: Fertilizing students the fundamental knowledge of related inspective technology and encourage them to contribute to the fields of food, drug and cosmetic.
Objective 2: Training the abilities of students at implementation, analyzation, solving problem, and innovation.
Objective 3: Enhancing the abilities of students on implementation, analyzation, solving problem and innovation.
Objective 4: Leading students with the global vision and social ethics.
Curriculum
Abiding the spirit of technology education and superior holistic of Chia nan University approach, teaching features of department not only focused on providing integral study but also supporting students to improve their competitiveness to obtain employment after graduation. A total of 220 credits are required for graduation.
Features:
The planned curriculum of department, for the first- and second-year students includes basic professional courses, which can develop students’ well-rounded theoretical foundation. For students in the third year or above, the professional curriculums were adapted to the field of knowledge subject to instrument analysis in food, drug, cosmetic, and related materials. Course were designed giving a guidance to students systemically and practical training to help them to obtain professional qualifications and certificates.
Courses can be categorized in three directions:
Courses in food, drug and their additive analysis:
Food chemistry, food additive, analytical chemistry, pharmaceutical analysis, and packing material of food and drug analysis, etc.
Courses in inspective skills:
Basic Lab operation, instrumental analysis, chemical spectroscopic analysis, application of mass spectrometry, practice of chromatographic analysis, etc.
Courses in obtaining certification:
Basic food analysis qualification assessment, advance food analysis qualification assessment, basic chemical analysis qualification assessment, and advance chemical analysis qualification assessment.
Lab and Facilities
Three professional Lab. of department were located nearby location of department in campus, including chemical analysis Lab., applied materials inspective Lab. and instrument analysis Lab. The main facilities of Lab. were briefly represented below:
Chemical analysis Lab: Basic glassware apparatus, vacuum over, hotplate, high-accuracy digital balance, melting point apparatus, refractometer and UV/Visible spectrophotometer, etc.
Applied materials inspective Lab: Sample cutting machine, polishing machine, viscosity meter, medicine dissolution instrument, impact test machine, contact angle meter, universal testing machine, metallurgical microscope and automatic coating system, etc.
Instrument analysis Lab: Gas chromatography-mass spectrophotomter. high-performance liquid chromatograph, gas chromatograph, atomic absorption spectrometry, UV/Visible spectrophotometer and fluorescence Spectrophotometer, etc.
